Domingos Tótora
Domingos Tótora is an artist and designer from Maria da Fê, a town in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. His work is deeply rooted in the land where he was born, grew up, and made his name as an artist. In his practice, he combines different types of soil with cardboard, water and glue, each time creating a unique material from which he hand-forms sculptural pieces and interior objects. All of them have an extraordinary tactile attractiveness, with their lines reminiscent of the undulating landscapes, waterways and rock formations of his native region. Baked by the Brazilian sun, Domingos Tótora's objects have the strength of tree bark, the texture of volcanic rock and the rich colour of the foundation of the material world — the earth. By his own admission, he has achieved such a level of unity with nature that he is no longer simply inspired by it, but is an integral element of its transformative forces. Today, in a space that serves as his home and studio, he creates small and large-scale works for galleries, hotels, brands and boutiques around the world, including Aman NY, Santa Monica Proper and Loewe.
«Rather than being inspired by nature, I strive to exist in sync with it, recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things.»
