Sergio Rodrigues is a designer whose furniture is the basis of the cultural code of the new Brazil. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1927 into a family of artists, journalists, writers and playwrights. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of Brazilian architecture in the 1950s, the designer questioned conventions and always followed his own intuition to create extraordinary pieces of furniture. Able to combine traditional materials and techniques with innovative design and a sense of humour, Rodrigues was convinced that things should reflect the identity of the country in which and for which they were created, be comfortable and give the owner peace of mind and self-confidence. During the years when Brazil's new capital was being built, Sergio Rodrigues' furniture was used to equip palaces, government offices, diplomatic missions, business and cultural centres. In a career spanning sixty years, the designer has created more than 1,200 pieces, many of which have received international acclaim and are in the collections of leading museums and galleries around the world.
«A piece of furniture is not only its shape, not only the material it is made of, but also something inside it. It's the spirit of the piece. It's the Brazilian spirit. It's Brazilian furniture.»
